Slate House is a four-bedroom residence located in the seaside village of Port Isaac, on the rugged Atlantic coast of North Cornwall.
The design draws inspiration from the traditional fisherman’s cottages that line the steep, winding streets of the village. In particular, it references the distinctive hanging slate facades commonly found throughout Port Isaac. Slate, a vernacular material sourced locally from the historic Delabole Quarry, is used not only on the roof but also on the external walls, forming a natural protective shell against the harsh Atlantic weather.
The house is arranged over two levels, with two bedrooms on each floor and a shared living space at ground level. At either end of the roof, discreet balcony courtyards are carved into the ridgeline, offering private outdoor spaces with views over the garden and towards the sea. A chimney structure conceals a shower tower in the upper floor bathroom, adding an element of surprise and vertical drama. On the ground floor, sliding glass doors open out onto the garden, seamlessly merging interior and exterior to create an expanded living environment connected to the coastal landscape.
