The Huts Eastbourne

GKA make longlist for ‘The Huts’

George King Architects are among 12 practices longlisted for The Huts, a competition launched earlier in the year to find ‘iconic designs for bespoke beach huts’ to be commissioned for the Devonshire Ward in Eastbourne. The competition, which was open to all registered architects, will now proceed to a shortlisting phase, where eight designs will be chosen and revealed to the public who will have the chance to vote for their favorite.
This is GKA’s second foray into the beach hut typology, having previously created beach huts made of steel on Bondi and Cottesloe beach in Australia: http://georgekingarchitects.com/projects/

Lasermaze Detroit Design Festival 2015

Lasermaze debuts in Detroit underpass

George King Architects have completed an installation for the 2015 Detroit Design Festival made from over three miles of glowing UV string.
Situated in an underpass along the Dequindre Cut, a former railroad which has been converted to a walking path and greenway, Lasermaze is suspended from an industrial structure of steel scaffolding and chains. The three miles of string was carefully threaded through the structure over the course of a week, secured with over 3000 hand tied knots.
Lasermaze is a temporary installation located at the Dequindre Cut in Detroit until mid-October 2015. Click here for more information http://georgekingarchitects.com/projects/

Lasermaze Detroit Design Festival 2015

GKA selected for Detroit Design Festival

George King Architects are very excited to announce that our submission to the Detroit Design Festival’s public design competition has been selected for the 2015 program. The competition called for large scale outdoor installations centered around the theme of play.
Our winning proposal, Lasermaze, is formed from three miles of wool carefully wrapped around a 6m x 6m scaffolding grid to form a maze. The wool is dyed with UV ink and at night the entire structure will be lit with UV lights which will give the walls of the maze and an ethereal, semi-transparent nature. Lasermaze was the only international installation selected from over 50 entries to the competition. If you would like to come play with us in our maze the Detroit Design Festival 2015 runs from September 22 – 26. For more details please visit detroitdesignfestival.com
GKA attends Yarkyfest

GKA promote Camera House at Yarkyfest

George King Architects visited St Petersburg’s Yarky Hostel last week to check on the build of our latest project, The Camera House. The “freestanding hotel room” was promoted during the week long Yarkyfest celebrations. A press conference, lectures, tours and other events were attended by local media, overseas visitors and St Petersburg residents alike.
The Camera House takes the external shape of a bellows camera and uses the principles of a camera obscura to project an ever changing image of the outside onto the inside of the structure. Check back soon to see the completed Camera House on site at Yarky Hostel & Space.

Zombie Bench among best designed benches

We were very pleased to discover that our super spooky Zombie Bench, designed by George King in 2012 for the RIBA’s Pews and Perches competition has been named as the #2 Best Designed Bench in the World by design site Design Curial.
The bench is made from 70 pre-fabricated concrete arms cast from a real human arm. Follow the link below to have a look at the other contenders which include designs by Gaudi, Thomas Heatherwick and Mies Van Der Rohe.
