GKA attends Yarkyfest

GKA promote Camera House at Yarkyfest

George King Architects visited St Petersburg’s Yarky Hostel last week to check on the build of our latest project, The Camera House. The “freestanding hotel room” was promoted during the week long Yarkyfest celebrations. A press conference, lectures, tours and other events were attended by local media, overseas visitors and St Petersburg residents alike.
The Camera House takes the external shape of a bellows camera and uses the principles of a camera obscura to project an ever changing image of the outside onto the inside of the structure. Check back soon to see the completed Camera House on site at Yarky Hostel & Space.

Zombie Bench among best designed benches

We were very pleased to discover that our super spooky Zombie Bench, designed by George King in 2012 for the RIBA’s Pews and Perches competition has been named as the #2 Best Designed Bench in the World by design site Design Curial.
The bench is made from 70 pre-fabricated concrete arms cast from a real human arm. Follow the link below to have a look at the other contenders which include designs by Gaudi, Thomas Heatherwick and Mies Van Der Rohe.

George King Architects head to Yarkyfest

This summer George King Architects will head to Russia to install our latest project, a freestanding residential unit called The Camera House. Built to celebrate the opening of the Yarky art hostel in St Petersburg, components for the temporary module are currently being pre-fabricated off-site and will be installed at the hostel week beginning July 5th.
The external form of The Camera House is inspired by the old bellows camera, while the inside will feature a camera obscura display. The Camera House was one of five winning designs chosen from an international competition organised by the hostel and Project Baltia Magazine.
