GKA take ‘highly commended’ honour in stadium contest
George King Architects are pleased to reveal their stage 2 design in the Forest Green Rovers FC stadium contest. GKA’s design takes inspiration from the surrounding countryside with an inhabitable green roof that forms a landscaped park. A series of sloped terraces rise gently in an arrangement of bands to create a recreational space for the community to enjoy.
GKA’s design received a ‘highly commended’ nod from the competition jury. Designs from Zaha Hadid Architects and Glen Howells have progressed to the final, with a winner chosen this coming September.

Forged by Flame on display at Towner Gallery
GKA’s shortlisted submission for Eastbourne’s pier fire memorial sculpture competition has gone on display at the Towner Gallery in Eastbourne. Formed from 20,000 two pence coins reclaimed from the 2014 fire, Forged by Flame depicts a twisting copper spire.
Members of the public are encouraged to share their thoughts on the shortlisted designs by emailing sculpture@eastbourne.gov.uk

GKA make stadium design contest shortlist
George King Architects are delighted to be one of nine firms shortlisted in the Forest Green Rovers stadium design competition. The competition called for an “iconic building designed to the highest sustainability standards.”
GKA’s design takes the form of an inhabitable hill, with the stadium carved into the middle. The hill itself will be a landscaped park featuring a series of sloped terraces which rise gently in an arrangement of bands to create a space that can be used by the community for recreational activities such as walking, jogging or cycling.
The competition will now be narrowed down to two finalists, with a winner chosen in September.

‘Forged by Flame’ makes pier sculpture shortlist
George King Architects have been shortlisted in an open design competition calling for a sculpture to reflect on the 2014 Eastbourne Pier fire.
GKA’s submission, Forged by Flame, is formed from over 20,000 damaged two pence coins that were reclaimed from the ashes of the fire. It depicts a single elegant, tapering, twisting flame, a symbol not just of destruction but of creation, rebirth and hope.
The next phase of the competition will include an exhibition of scale models and a public vote held at the Towner Gallery in late June.

Book Box to showcase at London Festival of Architecture
GKA’s submission in the RIBA’s Constructing Communities competition has been shortlisted and will appear as part of the London Festival of Architecture alongside other shortlisted designs.
The Book Box works as a community books exchange and meeting place. Books are stored within timber boxes arranged around the facade of the box that can be accessed when the box is closed. During the day the Book Box opens up, transforming into a flexible space for community use containing seating, desks, power and internet connectivity.
The exhibition will take place at the Peckham Levels from 02 June through 30 June.

GKA commissioned for NHS installation
George King Architects have been commissioned by the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to create an installation celebrating the life changing gift of organ donation. Following an open call, GKA’s design submission, One Thousand Thank Yous, was selected by a panel of representatives from the hospital.
The installation is formed from 1000 gold anodised aluminium laser cut gift tags that will hang from the ceiling of the hospital foyer. Each gift tag will be engraved with a thank you message penned from recipient to donor.
As well as recognising and thanking all organ and tissue donors, One Thousand Thank Yous forms part of a wider NHS campaign to raise awareness about organ donation. A national campaign has been launched to help collect the 1000 messages from donor recipients.

The Stargazer’s Cabin a winner at Eastbourne
We are very excited to announce that The Stargazer’s Cabin has been selected as one of the four winning entries in Eastbourne Borough Council’s The Huts international competition. The winners were revealed at a gala event in Eastbourne on the 16th of March and the results made public in a feature in The Sunday Times on the 20th of March.
The Stargazer’s Cabin features a laser cut façade perforated with thousands of small holes which are precisely mapped to form the star constellations of the night sky. LED lights mounted behind illuminate the perforations creating a beacon on the beach. Check back soon for more details on The Stargazer’s Cabin’s impending construction.

Baldstocks design revealed
GKA’s latest residential project is an extension to a 17th century cottage in The Cotswolds. Located in a conservation area and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the design features a set of sliding glass doors which disappear behind timber bookcases to create a flawless indoor/outdoor space.
The project is currently at the planning stage and due for completion in summer 2016.

GKA progress to ‘Huts’ shortlist
George King Architects have progressed to the next phase of the ‘The Huts’ competition. We can now reveal our design, entitled, ‘The Stargazer’s Cabin,’ which will take the form of a glowing lantern, with a laser-cut facade depicting constellation maps.
The final stage of the competition will include an exhibition of scale models of the shortlisted designs and public vote from March 9th – 14th. Winners will be announced at a gala event on March 16th. Click here for more information about The Stargazer’s Cabin.

GKA make longlist for ‘The Huts’
George King Architects are among 12 practices longlisted for The Huts, a competition launched earlier in the year to find ‘iconic designs for bespoke beach huts’ to be commissioned for the Devonshire Ward in Eastbourne. The competition, which was open to all registered architects, will now proceed to a shortlisting phase, where eight designs will be chosen and revealed to the public who will have the chance to vote for their favorite.

Lasermaze debuts in Detroit underpass
George King Architects have completed an installation for the 2015 Detroit Design Festival made from over three miles of glowing UV string.
Situated in an underpass along the Dequindre Cut, a former railroad which has been converted to a walking path and greenway, Lasermaze is suspended from an industrial structure of steel scaffolding and chains. The three miles of string was carefully threaded through the structure over the course of a week, secured with over 3000 hand tied knots.
